Well, we've been home for several days now, and maybe I'm up to talking about it. We stayed with friends in florida first, and then the 4 of us tookt he cruise. for the most part it really wasn't bad. he got up every day, went to the meals, walked around the ship with me, went to the shows, so that was fine. When we wneent to the beach, he wouldn't go near the water, but he did take a shower while we were on the cruise. It also got cold, and it was cold in Florida. In fact, our last day was supposed to be on a private island in the Bahamas, but we wound up in key West, and it was about 40 degrees there. The last day of the cruise, I came down with a terrible cold. and I never get a cold. Of course, now he's sick. And he started getting very arguementative when we got back to our friends' home. We were supposed to be there from Monday to Thursday, and then home, but everyday he became crankier. Then, of course, he caught my cold. On the plane he was horrible, and actually did not speak to me the next day. I took him to the doctor on Friday, to start him on something to avoid bronchitis (he always gets it whenever he gets a cold). I also stopped his resveratrol.. he's in a test program for resveratrol from the VA. I really don't know if it was that, or the fact that I was constantly telling him to drink it, or what. His urine was also burning. Since i stopped the resveratrol, he has become more himself. I'll have to call the VA to see if it could have affected his personality and his urine. meanwhile, I'm whipped. they also lost one of our bags on the way hime, which we did get delivered the next day, but that was just another aggrivation. We are supposed to go on anohter cruise with that couple and another one in October, I have until June to cancel, I think I probably will. It's just so hard when I'm the only person. the airport was unbelievable also, going through security in Miami was from hell. Wheew. some vacation.
chris, I am glad you have re-couped somewhat. I would love to do a cruise but I don't think I could handle the hassle and more than that my dh has spinal stenosis so bad he could not walk around the ship and he would get confused with a electric cart in the crowded areas.
A person is exhaused just getting everything together to leave, then the stress with the security and airport - just too much to handle.
Maybe we who are unable to do a cruise could come up with some other special event to substitute. Say, a cruise is going to run min. of $2,000 for a couple so what other things could we do easier with the cruise money. We can go out to eat more, go to a movie, local theatre. If you live in a large city there are more choices. If I lived near Disney we would go there. It is very handicap friendly and you could rent a couple of the electric scooters or go to some of the other theme parks. Unfortunately where we live the electric scooters will have to be at Lowe's or WallMart.
Hey, Lois, what a great idea!! A vacation at Walmart!! Today I went in and saw a little shift in the girls' department with a peace symbol on a thong necklace. I forget what the logo was on the shift. But think! Return to the 60s for free! A year's worth of Assurance briefs! A year's worth of Friskies!! And you get to ride around in a scooter to your heart's content and mow everyone down in your way!!
I'm teasing, I don't think my husband would have EVER gone on a cruise, and the once or twice he went to Walmart, he got tired very quickly.
Chris, I'm sorry the cruise didn't work out better for you. You'd think that, of all places, Florida would be understanding at security check points!
We did a cruise in January. It was okay, we went with friends who helped. DH was on good behavior. He had trouble with menu, couldn't remember what he wanted, needed help with buffet. He was always looking for a water fountain. There aren't any. We finally settled for bottled water. He never drinks water at home. The airport is hard. I have to do everything. He walked away from his carry on. It was lucky that I noticed. The TSA agent gave him my ID. I guess he figured the man is always in charge. I am glad we went, but we won't be going again. We will stay closer to home. Luckily, we stayed well. Getting sick on a trip really makes you want to stay home.
My DH says he went on one cruise and doesn't care to ever go on another. His one cruise was to Korea when he was in the Army. I think they fly the servicemen to their destination now but when he went, it was on a ship and all the guys were seasick.
We have taken many cruises over the years, so I didn't realize how difficult it would be, although, last January, we took a cruise from NYC with 3 other couples and he got sick while on the cruise, so he was pretty much stuck in the room for half the time. That should have warned me. But it's the irritability that surprised me, and really made things difficult. Our friends were quite shocked at how really bad he was, too. People just don't get it until they walk in our moccasins.
So far, cruises are working best for us. Living in Florida we don't have to fly to the ports. We take the cruise connection bus from our town. I have to do all the driving now and I'm to the point where I don't like to drive very far for a vacation (especially on I-4!) We have to go from Ft. Laudersale or Miami as the buses don't go over to Port Canaveral I have a cruise booked for the end of May. We always have a balcony so there's a lot of time for just relaxing by ourselves. I have asked for a table for two as he can't carry on much of a conversation any more and his table manners aren't the best now.
