I've not heard of this medication, and doctor is offering it to help my husband sleep at night. Have any of you given this to your spouses? Did it work? Were there any side effects?

its a generic for remeron an antidepressant i think mary. i havent used it but heard it can cause weight gain...:). have you tried the natural melatonin to see if that works for sleep first? my DH zonks out with just a very small dose of melantonin -
google remeron and you can see about the drug.. i dont know much more. i would try natural products first.my brother is a pharmacist and he told me to try using saw palmetto for DH prostate issues instead of the flomax type he was on. its working better so far than the other without all the side effects! and his urine is clear again most of the time. i am glad i tried it. i will discuss with uro at next meeting..just thought i'd let you know sometimes you can find natural supplements that arent as potent and side effects are less. i would look it up and see if his need outweighs any possible side effects.
hope this helps. ps i was asking bro about sleep aide and he definately recom melatonin first to see -Divvi

Claude was on Remeron (brand name) for awhile. We didn't see any change in his sleep after being on it for several weeks so we took him off it.

Like with all meds, some work for some people and don't for others.

Nora, there are nine listed. I apparently got here first, so the others added numbers and other letters to theirs. I'm just lucky I guess! <grin>

MY DH has been on Remeron for depression since diagnosis. It has worked well for him. I have not noticed any side affects. It is supposedly an appetite enhancer so it could cause weight gain. My DH needs that. It causes drowsiness but I haven't heard of it being prescribed specifically as a sleep aid.

Mary, I was a redhead but the silver took over. Even Preference by L'Oreal couldn't keep the silver subdued"-)

Ladies, I have decided that since a sleep aid is all he needs, not to give him the Remeron. He's not depressed, and his appetite doesn't need enhancing! I'm going a different route. Thank you!

Thank you JeanetteB,I have decided not to start the Remeron as I just wanted something I can take when Ive had a bad night not something every night which needs to get into the system .I think Ill take a trip to the health shop see what they have for occaisonal use.I dont think Im depressed ,maybe I was at first when DH went into a care home but feel much better about things now ,thank you again Rosie

Mary, I agree with divvi that you should try melatonin. The consulting psychiatrist at Shelly's facility has added melatonin and there is less anxiety in the evening and he seems to sleep better. When I visit tomorrow I'll find out what the dosage is and when it is given.

My husband is on mirtazipine. It was prescribed for sleep and to pick up his appetite. He don't sleep all night. He gets up to use restroom and thinks hes going to work so I tell him to get some rest for work tomorrow and I get him back in bed.
