Yay, Joan! Do what you want. I wouldn't miss watching the inauguration either. And, if you watch the parade, my daughter-in-law will be in the front row of the first band. She's a trombonist in the army Ceremonial Brass Band. Also, if someone else can't be there, she will be on stage with the Herald Trumpets! My son says to watch for him in the crowd of three million!
my wife and I usually go to bible study at our church on Tuesday mornings, then out to lunch with friends. I was trying to decide what to do this week (I, also, want to see the inauguration) when the leader of the study group called to say he was cancelling it so we could all watch this most historic event. Now our only problem is that the cleaning service provided by the retirement home we live in does our apartment from 11:30 to 12:30 on Tuesdays. She will have to work around us, or else sit down and watch it with us.
You go girl!!! I've been debating taking the day off of work to watch it all! I decided I'd better save my days off for when my husband will need me. Last night I stayed up late clearing my DVR so that it will hold MOST of the day's festivities, so it will be like I'm at home!
You have given so much to AD, do this for JOAN!!!!
ps any takers on what color of ball gown Ms Obama Will be wearing to the inaugural ball?? she looks devine in RED but i am betting a royal blue..anyone else??? jackie o wore that out of this world pearl colored long coat and sheath dress and tiara.will be hard to top!..Divvi
She looks good in whatever she wears! I would go for Ivory or Purple... I would wear the royal blue for the swearing in and parade...
You are right - Jackie O was always stylish and had the best clothes, but so did Nancy Reagan, but with a more mature look for her. Jackie was more Mrs. Obama's age.
One of the news ladies on TV this morning had asked what she was wearing and SHE DIDN"T KNOW. For either the Ball or the Swearing in. She has been too busy moving and getting her kids started in school. I am sure she has had some designer making several gowns and etc. because she is going to need them.
I ditto everyone's encouragement in your choice, Joan! Dementia tries to force us to be the givers always. Since Sid will be in good hands, put your robe and slippers on, sit back and observe history in the making.
Go for it, Joan. I bet when Joel was 2 or 3 you didn't let him dictate your activities.
Touchy subject but shouldn't your 'support group' support a little respite?
Opportunities for respite aren't all that easy to come by and allowing yourslf to become isolated from everything except Sid and Alz is a recipe for disaster.
Ditto what carosi said. I'm surprised and disappointed that they didn't agree with you.
Obviously, we do! <grin>
Husband has spent most of the day today watching news broadcasts about today's inaugural events and plans for tomorrow. So I guess he won't care if I want to watch!
(Nope, not gold. Don't think it would be good for her skin tone. Red or purple, she looks marvelous in both. Silver would be okay.)
Joan, you are entitled to this time for yourself. The members of your support group must not be so enlightened as the ones on this site, who seem to be of one mind. Do this for YOU. Enjoy!
Thanks everyone. Sid isn't the least bit upset about me staying home. A little of the husband I used to have shone through tonight when he said that I deserved to do what I wanted. I still would have liked us to be home together to watch it, but I'm going to try to not let that spoil my enjoyment.
This gown thing is way off topic, but I have to add my two cents. I was 12 years old when JFK was inaugurated. It was the first time in my life I paid attention to a president. I watched the whole thing on TV, and I was fascinated by his young, beautiful, stylish wife. The whole short time he was in office, I followed her and her gorgeous clothes.Fast forward about 45 years - the Jacqueline Kennedy White House dress collection was touring the country, and my friend and I went to the Boston Museum to see it. I was shocked at the colors! Pastels, plaids, bright colors. I never knew her clothes were so colorful. I thought she only wore white. Duh! We had black and white TV's back then, so I never saw the colors! Now we have an HD color digital big screen plasma - I cannot wait to see Michelle's gown.
It's very interesting that all the discussion about Michele Obama, from both women and men, is what she will wear. No one cares what he will wear. Also, very little attention is given to what she will do with her life now and how she will contribute to society. I noticed the same thing when Hillary Clinton was running for President - the press spent more time on what she was wearing than what she said. No comments were ever made about what the men were wearing. I wonder if they could get by wearing "the emperor's new clothes"?
Note: this posting is about the press and people in general, not about politics.
Suits are kind of the uniform of the day, but you can say a lot with tie selection. The act of putting on a tie, tying a full windsor and having the ends meet just where you want them is akin to a knight putting on armor.
I wholeheartedly agree that you should be able to do what you want to tomorrow. The only explanation I can think of for the support group's reaction is that your presence adds so much to the meetings, they are reluctant to have you stay home. Take it as a convoluted compliment!
I just read an article by her designer and HE called her inaugural ball gown "ivory"!!!! Yea!!!
The dress for the inauguration was lemongrass....and those shoes......cost more than a monkey's uncle! But they were beautiful! I was wondering if the coat part of the outfit had a thermal inner layer....I would have frozen to death otherwise....
Oh, it had several layers, wool lace in a silk net (and if I recall correctly, the silk net had several layers), with a silk radzimir underneath and a layer of pashmina for warmth. Plus she also wore a cardigan with the matching dress.
On one of the news shows, they talked about the "engineering" involved in designing her outfit for even worse weather than they had. It took a week to "weave all the layers together".
I never saw the shoes. But I did wonder how her feet felt after walking so much of the parade route. (I figured they might have walked the entire way EXCEPT for the shoes she was wearing!)
I agree, bluedaze. This is a nice diversion. Of course we're all still aware of what we're dealing with and know we have to get back to all the yucky stuff after all the excitement dies down.
