Several months ago, you told us about Google Scholar. Thanks! I wish I'd know about it much sooner! It would have been very helpful when I was working.
When I search on it, I can pull up abstracts, but I have difficulty tracking down full articles. A lot of the articles that are on dementia are in journals that are not free on-line and that are not accessible on-line through the local universities' libraries. Do you know a way to get them?
The first way I try is to see who the "corresponding author" is. Almost always, they'll give an address for the author, and often, they'll give his/her email. I send an email (preferably ... I'm lazy) that says:
Dear Dr. (or Dear Prof. if the person is overseas ... "Prof" is a higher title than "Dr"):
I would appreciate it if you would send me a reprint or .pdf of your paper:
Give citation
Thank you, Janet
Mailing address email address
Very often, they are tickled pink to have anyone interested in their research, and will fire off a copy to you right away. I've gotten some within five minutes of sending my email. (I always send a "thank you, I'm looking forward to reading it" when I receive the paper. If the prof is high up and his assistant responds to my request, I thank the assistant for the prompt reply and copy the prof.)
If the paper looks really interesting, I may say that I'd like any other recent publications of his on the same subject. Some of the nicer researchers send other papers even without my asking. I make the appropriate fuss of appreciation when they do that.
If that fails, then I truck on over to the university that takes the journal, and get a copy made. Here, we have a med school that carries just about everything. I can get a copier card that's kind of like a credit card. The more money I put on the card, the lower the cost per page (price is set when you "charge up" the card), I think anywhere from 5 - 15ยข per page.
Some university libraries offer services for tracking down and copying papers for you. Not free, though.
Sometimes, I have to use my nose... You know how Kitty's Katrina gets in her way? I try to see around two little black heads, watching the cursor and trying to swat it, enchanted by the screensaver. Paws on the keyboard, wreaking havoc. Tails in my face.
When Shadow gets tired of that, he insists on climbing up to my shoulder and purring madly in my ear. Of course, I have to use one arm to make sure he doesn't fall. Mistee prefers to explore the tangle of cords and investigate the zip drives and the weird noises the printer makes. (Don't be surprised if I'm suddenly missing in action ... who knows what she may end up doing to my computer.)
Both of them just as cute and sweet and affectionate as can be. Really lucked out with these two!!!
Sunshyne-there can't be anything much sweeter than kittens. They smell so sweet and are adorable. My six year old has the pushiest wet pink nose. Is there anything more peaceful than when the are napping with a smile on their faces.
Noche` just LOVES the printer and the noises it makes. The other day, he was sitting on top looking down into the receiving bin watching the pages come out. When it was all done, he pressed a button on top of the printer. Don't ask me which one. It started up again. Blank paper came out. He did that a couple of times before I hit the off button. Smart cat!
Last night I was laying on the sofa. He got on the arm of the sofa and started playing in my hair with his paw. Then he started chewing and licking my hair. He got his sharp little teech involved and the game had to stop. It hurt. Crazy Cat!
But bluedaze is right. There's nothing sweeter than little kittens. And they do smell so sweet and affectionate. My little guy is almost 8 months old now. Can you believe it. He really thinks he is hot stuff.
Oh, Mawzy, can you watch youtube? There are FUNNY pictures there of cats who have learned to make the printer spit out paper, and do it for HOURS! (and if you haven't watched Nora and her piano playing, you're in for a treat!)
Sunshyne, Mawzy and bluedaze, I LOVE hearing your cat stories! I can just picture the kitties. They bring a lot of love, fun and distraction. Keep telling us about their adventures!
So many of us have fun sharing cat and/or dog stories and really seem to enjoy the change of pace from dealing with AD problems. I wonder if it would be possible for Joan to provide a page where we could upload critter photos? I think it would enhance the tremendous sense of family that already exists on this site. I would love to see photos of Mawzy's Noche, Sunshyne's kittens, Bluedaze's cats and other that have been mentioned. Seems to me someone has chihuahuas. That would be cute, too. Just a thought.
For a period of time, they loaded pictures of themselves with their cats on the individual accounts...Kitty has a gorgeous white cat and I think Nikki has a horse....New Realm has a dog....Am I missing anyone? Sunshyne and Mawzy could load pictures there and let us know and we could look for a week or so, and then revert back to the regular pictures.....it's just a thought...bluedaze said hers looked like one of the bookmarks Joan is selling. Is my memory going bad????
bluedaze, I bought a pack of Joan's bookmarks since the Maine Coon Cat looks just like my daughter's cat, Bailey. When I gave her the bookmarks she commented that she would have to speak to Bailey about posing for pictures such as this and not sharing the income.
Imagine how surprised I was to see that the discussion I started with a simple question to Sunshyne about research had 14 posts on it. I should have known! Cats! If only I weren't allergic...
Sorry, Janet....after she gave you her answer, and I remembered her new housemates, and I was as just curious as a ......
need I say more? <grin>
By the way, why are so many silent today? I've done my share and more of typing, but even the dirty dozen has only surfaced for one each today!!!!! Did I do something wrong?????
Mary, glad you are in the mood to post today! guess some of us are just lulling around today:) i have been trying to get some cleaning and laundry done..ugh! and want to have a free day tomorrow for the 'festivities'..hey! i do have 2 chihuahuas and they are super cute. maybe can post a pic at some point. I think watching at AD movie the other day, left me in one of those moody days. Glad you are filling in the cracksfor us Red...i bet yall are excited bout the cruise not far off. take care, Divvi
Sorry, no pictures of my angels ... I don't think I even own a camera. The last one I remember seeing was a Polaroid, older than the hills. Probably stopped even making film for that ten years ago.
But, bluedaze, you're right, isn't it amazing how good cats smell? Definitely one of the major benefits when compared to dogs. You can bury your nose in their fur. When Shadow wants on my shoulder, it always seems as if he's been investigating a box of perfumed powder. He smells yummy.
One of the things that's most adorable about him ... all his leather is black, nose, mouth, paw pads. So when he's sitting on the floor, gazing up woefully wondering why I haven't picked him up, all I can see are his eyes, huge and golden.
Now, Mistee has a white streak down one side of her nose. So her nose leather on the white side is pink, and on the other side, it's black.
(Janet, we can turn any topic into a thread on cats.)
Dazed - I don't sleep as much as I would like. I will sleep a couple hours - wake up wide awake - turn on the light - read a while or play on my laptop until I feel sleepy again. I would love to just sleep through the night.
lmohr- Sleep is the ultimate luxury. I think that I have always needed 9-10 hours of sleep a night. Back in olden times, before AD, I never got more than 7. Now, when I need more, I get even less. Never more than 4 in a row. Since chemo, DW is no longer incontient, but she does not know where the bathroom is. This requires an immediate wakeup and moving. My old house with the squeaky floors (that I have been meaning to fix for more than 25 years), now assist me in that wakeup.
seperate subject: I did see the sloth picture and wondered if you have to get a different permit for a two-toed vs. a three-toed sloth. Would there be an extra charge for the additional toes?
In Peru, where the sloth was, I'm sure there was no permit for anything. We're talking about being out in the boonies along the Amazon, where I was taken to see giant lilypads, 10' across, and pink dolphins. He was 3 toed. Very clumsy walking. Our zoo sloth is 2 toed, a bit larger (though they're like Persian cats, skin and bones under long hair/fur).
Your sloth is too adorable for words. And the excellent quality of the picture ever so clearly shows the toes. I would have noticed earlier, but I was too busy researching chewing gum. Nothing personal, dearest briegull, please forgive...
