We have several pairs of zippered shoes that we bought at the Clark's store at the Mall of America. These are wonderful shoes as my wife has no problems with using the zipper. I don't think she could deal with a velcro closure. We have had little luck in finding zippered tennis/gym shoes. We found a pair of Keds tennis shoes at Kohl's but the zipper was to difficult to close.

Anybody else out there using zippered shoes? Anybody have a source for zippered tennis shoes?

    Thanks

You can "google" zippered tennis shoes and several sites will be listed and some give user endorsements. This isn't quite so good as recommendations from this site from folks who use them, but it's a start.

We are having success with slip-on tennis shoes. Brand name is Skechers.

I find it interesting, in view of a lot of posts, that my wife, stage 6, can still tie her shoes without any help, while she frequently has trouble putting on her bra.

Its so ironic isnt it? my DH can actually still find the zipper on his windbreakers or jogset, put it in the slot and zip it and unzip til his hearts content...but cant has tons of issues with belts or buttons. i found some very soft comfy slipper type shoes that have rubber soles and he wears them everywhere. divvi

My husband, who can't talk in sentences (uses one word answers), or pour his own cup of coffee and add appropriate cream and sugar, or find the newspaper on the carport, or shave - can still button his shirts, zip his pants, and tie his shoes!!! Isn't the difference in each of our spouses (spice) amazing?

Divvi, I'm going to check out those shoes. Didn't you say once that you don't have a computer? Are you texting on a Blackberry or IPhone? Or did I misunderstand?

re:bra When I had to start dressing my wife, I told her that she didn't have to wear a bra if she didn't want to. (I had checked with family doctor already). She seemed relieved. Now bras are one less detail that we have to deal with.

dking, do you have her wear any type of under shirt?

    • CommentTimeOct 29th 2008

No under shirt. In summer, dress was usually a T-shirt and denim shorts. Now that it's getting colder, usually a long sleeve, double knit pullover (on chemotherapy infusion days, a button up shirt) and sweat pants or levis. She has weighed up to 235, but is now around 115. That means all existing clothing fits very loose, which from a dressing standpoint is more convenient. It was a process to weed through all her clothes to figure out what fit, what was too big and what was way too big. I have yet to figure out how women's sizes work, other than size 8 from one manufacturer doesn't necessarily mean that size 8 from another manufacturer will fit the same, and I have no idea what size 8P means. It may be harder to be a woman that it looks.

8P means size 8 for a petite (short) woman. Other than that, there often isn't any rhyme or reason to women's sizes!

marsh, aren't you the one we teased out of getting pantyhose onto her? Or was that Trisinger with Andrea?

Bras are hard to put on, period. Give her help or buy her undershirts at walmart.
  4.
Yes, you had me switch to knee-highs, which are a lot easier.
  5.
I would use a undershirt and skip the bra. We have had enough suffering with wearing bra's.

Marsh, as long as your wife would be comfortable going bra-less ... oh, yes, DO IT. Bras are another HUGE pain in the a-- ooops, derriere.

Marsh, the "girls" have been confined long enough! Set them free!!!! (at least at home!)

I do have to say, though, that I think getting plain t-shirts onto someone else (the kind with short sleeves) is one of the harder ADL assists. Sleeveless, no problem.

Mary, yes i have Webtv. no computer as such, just my wireless keyboard and TV screen..love it!:) got DH absolutely fav shoes at Dearfoam.com and model DM327...if anyone is looking for SUPER soft comfort for your spouse,indoor/out or just around the house these are awesome. i found them at some dept stores too but not in his size. i just ordered another color for xmass for him..i have tons of slippers for him and he just wears these everywhere and they wash beautifully. i have 2 pairs so far and getting another! they work well with light socks for winter too. i dont hesitate to recommend these to anyone, even us caregivers, haha...hope you find something he likes! divvi

Divvi, they are the same style my husband wears, so I hope he'll take to them. <grin> He has worn nothing but his L.B. Evans leather houseshoes with hard rubber soles that he could wear outside for 45 years! I'm going to try a pair of these for him for now and see if he'll prefer them. Thank you!

Mary, my DH has had bouts of gout thruout the yrs off/on and he already has sensitive feet -. these are just the softest shoes ever and i hope your DH likes them too. i found with all the lbs DH has been losing over time his foot size shrunk from normal 10 to now a 9. guess its normal for feet to lose inches too!:) i go down myself when on diets. good luck, you could return them if he didnt take to them too. ps there are lots of styles and all are very comfy..divvi

Any suggestions about shoes for husband who is saying his white tennis shoes are catching while he is walking in the house. He is evidently not picking
up his feet. I don't know if I should get leather soles or what. Something light is preferable and he has a "thick foot" and generally has to have extra wide
shoes. This may be a ongoing problem with no solution. He generally can't wear "slip ons" which would be better.

divvi--or anyone else--- Do you know if any of the shoes/slippers suggested come in super-sizes. He needs a 10 1/2 EEEE. The shoes he's using now are at least 8 yrs old. Tie, but he uses no laces. They are so bad even he has thrown them away and then retrieved them. Replacements were given away (by him) because they were "stiff". He has Crocs as well. Mostly he wear over the ankle socks (white, of course), and his in-home helper washes them out before they go into the laundry because they get so black. Needs the cotton base ones so colors don't work. Wish boxes were sturdier, I'd get shoes and let him wear the boxes. <grin>

Imohr, my DH was sticking his soles too when he walked on certain shoes and nearly fell himself by the catching. with your DH other issues this could lead to him falliing- i checked the dearfoams they are like i said super super soft well made shoes and seem to have lots of flexability with foam siding so they could work for wider feet-and my DH uses a C/D width and these are wide. he will be able to use a good sock when winter hits even with these. the soles on these shoes are rubber but dont stick like tennis shoes do on flooring. as far as #EEEE width thats a going to be hard.
usually a specialty store would carry that, or maybe one who deals diebetic shoes would carry wider widths? all i know is i have 3 pair of these now and as he uses daily i wash them lots and always have a clean pair ready. i cant tell you how long i looked fo rthe right shoe for him..
Mary, please let us know if you rDH likes them it may help others too.!!
