My AD husband has been increasingly peeing on the floor when he sits on the commode. WE have a armed potty chair over the raised commode and I am having to mop the floor daily. He sits instead of standing. Anyone have any suggestions? I have told him he needs to arrange himself downward but I am not getting through to him. He thinks the commode is "leaking"
My bedside commode came with a 'shield' (like a pail with no bottom). It can be adjusted to fit over a toilet, then instead of the pail, the shield directs everything into the toilet. Check with your sources for durable equipment. Also an old towel around the base of the toilet does wonders for quick wipe up. I have that set up all the time, even thouigh he seldom misses, I can't have any wet areas on the floor for my crutches to find.
The shield should help, just make sure that it it the soft flexable type or it will really hurt if he bumps himself while sitting down. They make several types. the health supply store should be able to direct you to the one you want.
I ran into this as well & decided to buy a toilet seat cover with a "cut-out" in the front...I got ours on-line...it attaches to the commode just like any other toilet seat, but the opening allows him (me) to get all his parts into the potty without 'forcing' things down & into those type seats without the opening. Here's the website if you'd like to look at it...I'm sure there are other places that might sell these too, but this one was what I got: http://www.toiletseatsource.com/toilet-seats/big-john-toilet-seats/7053+7054+4293642071.cfm?source=googleaw&kwid=big%20john%20toilet%20seats&tid=exact. You can do a "google" search for BIG JOHN TOILET SEATS and you'll see other options too. You can get it with or without the lid. In addition to the opening in the front, it is also "raised" just a bit more than reg seats, and 'oversized' for larger people. My dh isn't 'large', but I just thought it would be good as things go along...I will prob have to add the "seat bars" that just sit over the toilet soon as he's having trouble getting up/down more & more, but for now, we just have the seat & I'm helping him. Imohr, my husb forgot how to 'hold and aim' his pee pee...just would no longer grasp "holding" it...that's when we went to the 'seated' method & he does much better now. I hope this is helpful for you. Hang in there with the mopping!! I was doing all that too before getting this new seat.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I have a shield ( like a pot with no bottom) in the basement and forgot about it. I also noticed yesterday the lid was down position (the middle one) and that may be making the problem. I have raised it up and will see if that works first.
