For those of you who might have DH's who are Vets, I was at the VA with my DH for getting inot a trial on Resveratrol. Well, what I discovered was that, at least at the Bronx VA Medical Center, there is a Group Respite Program. It goes from ( to 2 pm on Fridays, only, but the men are all vets, over 60 yrs old who would benefit from enhanced cognitive stimulation. This program might be available at other VA centers, and I just wanted everyone to know about it. Unfortunately, it is too far for me to take my DH, takes me an hour to get there, but i'm going to check around. he didn't want to go to the one that's local, and private, because "it's all old peole". My Dh is 85. I'm sure he'd be one of the oldest, but many used walkers, so he got turned off.
Chris, my problem is that my husband has always been an introvert, and since he can no longer speak hardly at all, doesn't want any part of an adult day care. It sounds like a great program though!
The VA has a respite program an hour from were we live. So that was out for us. But I got them to give me respite at home for six hours a month. That is better than nothing. And they will increase it if you have to have it. I now have a caregiver come to my home for six hours a week. Check with you VA and see if they can help you with home visits. My DH was not to happy at first, but he is used to it now. And I can tell the difference it made for me. I really needed the time to get away for a few hours.
