We went yesterday, to the VA which I found out on this site is working in conjunction with Mt Sinai Medical Center, NYC on Alzheimers research. It was suggested after his appointment with the geriatric Psychiatrist, that he might like to be in the study on Resveratrol. They are studying many things there, and the doctor suggested this one, since he would be staying on his Exelon and Zoloft and it''s a liquid, so he drinks it with grape juice. We go on the 31st to sign all the papers and begin the study. has anyone had any experience with it? Dick is 85 yrs old, I think with a lot of the studies they probably want someone younger but this one you can be up to 90 yrs old.
I am not familiar with the study but my husband's geriatric psychiatrist recommends resveratrol as a supplement for him. He has been taking it for about a year. The dr also told us that alcohol should be avoided after dementia diagnosis. Mt. Sinai has a highly regarded geriatric dept.
That's funny, I told the doctor we have a glass of red wine each evening and he didn't comment. I'll ask when we go to start the study. I did notice that they have resveratrol as a suppliment, Have you noticed any improvement.?
Chris, alcohol consumed in excess can cause confusion, and in great excess can cause dementia. A lot of doctors are against giving it to an AD patient on principal. But there have been a number of studies which show that alcohol (especially wine) consumed in moderation can help prevent the onset of AD, and can slow down the progression of MCI and AD. I think we've talked about this on other threads.
Anyway, my husband's doctors are fully aware he has a glass of red wine with dinner. If they've reacted at all, it's just been to ask me if I monitor his intake, since he might forget how much he's had. There is one PA involved in his clinical trial who fussed a bit, but I suspect it was for religious reasons, not medical.
