I started a new discussion because I searched on "full Moon" and found many entries under other discussions. The FTD discussion was one of the major ones.

So...How many of you have survived this week? DH has been overally adjiated, angers easily, can't sleep as good, more focused on the bad stuff on tv, moods bouncing around. I'm not sure if this is just related to FTD or if everyone's having problems also. The last time there was a full moon, he was working out of town and had a terrible time. The phone calls were angry and sad at the same time. Now that he is home, I am getting it first hand again.

I am just looking for a little moral support, so I know I am not alone with this one.

    Mary!!
  2.
Sorry, I can't help you Mary. I never noticed any difference this week. Maybe just certain type of person. We don't have FTD. Have Parkenism/with
    both Dementias.

Divvi, your husband keeps us all in stitches! and you with your descriptions. Have you ever thought of getting him a "mannequin pis" fountain (like the one in Brussels - google it!) That might give him ideas...

Mine's still happily toting around his new buzzy razor, using it every hour or two. (of course, usually at that point that I'm trying to listen to the news...)
  3.
I never noticed any changes with my DH & the moon, but for many years I was the trainer of volunteers at Los Angeles Intl Airport for Travelers Aid. Many people w/mental problems 'travel' a lot, in that they are often found at bus or train stations, and of course, airports. We would try to see that they got to the right care facility or back home, whatever. Anyway, sometimes it seemed as if things got really out of hand and someone in the office would say, 'was there a full moon last night?' and almost always there was. It is no coincidence that the word 'lunatic' comes from 'luna' for moon. Can't explain it, don't think it's scientific, just that it seems to happen.

During my years in teaching public school, there were times when, there was more 'trouble in the air' than others.
Classroom disturbances, lunchroom issues etc. Kiddos just seemed on 'edge'.. and we'd usually discover that the moon was full. This week has been relatively ordinary down here on 'the farm'. If not for goat weeds however, the story might be different.

I praise GOD for goat weeds! DH has a personal mission to pull each and every one out of the ground. He has been busy at his work ...pulling weeds..hauling them to the burn pile...coming in to shower and change clothes..then goes back for more.

I've even wondered a time or two, if this dementia is Vascular OR FTD rather than Alz.

Last week I plodded along in a mode of acceptance. Yesterday I'm thinking, I wonder if its more FTD... Well golly ...in the big scheme of things..it makes little difference. I see things, like impulsiveness, or becoming STUCK on something (the goat weed project has been one of the better ones), food/eating issues and vision distortion. The longer term memory is NOT that impacted. The short term memory is less than 5 min. Executive function is minimal or less. However, he still recognizes people and associations he's had with them although he might not be able to call their names. When people ask me if he still 'knows' me or his friends...he does. BUT he doesn't realize that a chili/cheese/jalapeno nacho dish eaten with his fingers, makes a mighty mess and just uses his napkin to wipe his nose! Nuff said.. We seem to live in cycles of calm, then uproar. Its been relatively calm for nearly two weeks..

I predict though, that the bulldozer issue will flare up as soon as the last goatweed comes out of the ground! If there were goatweed SEEDS, I'd be planting like crazy.

This week has been ruff!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as I posted before I had kept a chart on DH's behavior and it seems to be worse and to escalate during the Full Moon. This morning he accused me of going into his wallet. He said it was not the pocket he had put it in!!!!!!!!!!!!! But this morning I noticed that the moon is waning. So hopefully things will be calmer this weekend. I have been on pins and needles all week!!!!!!!!!!! even my co-workers have noticed that I have more problems with him during the full moon. Judy, I am praying for a bumper crop of goat weeds for you!!!!!!!!!!!!

There must be something to this full moon stuff because in the NH where my DH is was extremely noisy. The normal quiet ones were verbally bouncing off the wall and the sundowners were in the hallway in full force and let me tell you that they are on the throttle and you have to watch your back because you can get run over with a wheelchair if you are not careful.

It has been crazy at the facility my husband is at this week - full moon affect. When there are 30 residents all off the wall, it is like a huge wall of negative energy when you walk into the place. I am so sensitive to it that all I have to do is walk in the door and I can pick up the difference. My DH has been worse - I think he is forgetting how to physically hug. He still likes to be hugged and will go 'mmmmmmmmmmmm' when I hug him though.

Numerous experiments have been conducted that seem to refute the notion that stages of the moon influence behavior. As a scientist, I know I should accept that, but as the spouse of an AD person, I have trouble. I know that her behavior is altered during the full moon. She becomes more agressive, more abusive and is more depressed. Perhaps those who conducted the studies have never lived with someone with Alz. 24/7 so Mary, I agree with your observations. Like most things, it probably is different with every person.

My husband has not had any changes, however, I haven't had a great full moon. On Tuesday I caught my 3rd toe on my vaccum cleaner, knew I had really done a number on it since it was white & laying on my 4th toe. Needless to say, after X-rays it is broke & displaced. My foot is now black almost to my ankle. What a pain....no pun intended. This is the first time in a long time, my husband walks faster than me.

Actually, I just did a wee bit of googling. Y'all ought to know by now that I search the web in the scientific arena from time to time! It's amazing what one can find with the right key words and a little perseverance. Charlie was a piece of cake -- he'd already told us he works at UC Davis, he just hadn't said in what capacity. Not many scientists by the name of Charles Summers there. Took two seconds. (OK, maybe five.)

Corn snakes are very pretty. Bearded dragons are interesting. Pythons, now, I'd have a real problem cuddling up to.

I hope the cat is in a different household, poor thing.

bluedaze, you talkin' about Charlie, or the three-cornered alfalfa hopper? The hopper, I gotta admit, is kind of cute for a bug. (You're right, Charlie looks positively human for an entomologist.)

Mary, had no problem with my wife during the full moon but a couple of weeks ago we had a big low pressure system sitting right over us and she stayed extremely confused during that time. Couldn't open the refrigerator. Couldn't find the bath room. Couldn''t find our cats room or her dishes. Our Rector suggested the low pressure system might have caused it. Will keep close watch the next time this happens.

Don, that's interesting. My DH's arthritis is definitely worse with a low pressure system.

Our neighbor's cat had her kittens when the moon was full last week.

Over the years I've come across many medical professionals who discount the effects of weather changes, except the ones who have experienced them. Bone breaks, arthritis, and even severe joint injuries(less than a break) will forecast storms without fail. My hubby's side effect pain ratchets up every time we have a storm coming in---the barometric pressure changes. Growing up the oldest of 7, I remember the times my Mom would comment that she'd be glad when the weather shifted or the moon phase progressed so our behavior would improve.

These are not old wives tales. They are anecdotal observations, and our parents, grand-parents, and great-grands were reporting what they saw and experienced. Recently, medical studies are beginning to bear out what they knew to be true.

When I lived in Rochester, NY everyone in the city with sinus problems would get headaches at the same time. I had a neighbor who would call his wife and ask her to ask me if I was sick. If both of us were sick we knew which meds to take to make it all go away. And then one of the local talk show people got "it" too, and I'd just listen to the radio to find out if he was in pain.

That was caused by weather changes. Because of where Rochester is, the changes can be excessively sudden, and strong.

Okay, the full moon is over and my Dh has suddenly returned from la la land. Saturday, he just kinda snapped out of it. Does not have any recollection of the past 10 days or any of the events that took place. He is back to himself and it is scary!!!!!!!!!!! he is taking his meds and everything, now I will get used to this and then in about 21 days BAMMM he's behavior will hit me between the eyes again!!!!!!!!!!! I hate this disease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13.
Same here. Friday night he had a fire going in the garage. We have a large garage with a barrel stove. The radio turned on and we spent a couple of hours after I got off of work visiting in the garage. Just like old times. As I have said before, he is not diagnosed (I'm pretty sure he has FTD, it is pointing that direction) and practically "normal" a lot of the time. The weekend was awesome. A couple of times he got really short with me for no reason and then actually noticed that he did it and apologized.

The moon affect in our house really does happen and he is so out of it and all the other stuff is so much worse during the full moon.

    Mary!!

    Hi Mary
Don't look, but here it comes again. I was wondering why my wife was to much worse and out of it over the weekend and then when I left my office last night, I noticed that the moon was almost full. Probably will be in another few days,

I think a light bulb just lit. Hubby has had some incontinence issues off and on. Last spat of events was about a month ago. Now they're happening again. I'm making notes to see if it's moon phase related. He gets upset more each time it occurs. He's been adamant about not using shields or Depends, but actually asked if we could get some shields, and verified that our helper bought them when he did the grocery shopping today. If this does happen with the moon phase, we can be better prepared to deal with it and maybe he won't get so upset.

Yeah, it's the frustration of my husband when he can't make it there on time that's the reason behind the Depends. And that happened when he was wearing a belt and zipper and jockey shorts. Now with pull-up, pull-down trousers and ditto depends, he's fine - sometimes he's a bit premature in peeing (aren't we all!) but he just deflects it into the Depends while he gets settled.

OH THE MOON!! My husband's been impossible today - he was supposed to visit a day-care today. Wouldn't go. Flat. Hasn't done ANYTHING all day but walk around and mutter about how terrible I am.

I'm not one for superstition but the last 3 days have been extremely difficult with my wife. When I finally got in bed last night I noticed how bright it was outside so got up to see if an outdoor light was left on. Nope. I don't know if it is the full moon or just one of "those" days but DH seems unable to be quiet. He is either talking to himself or making odd noises. Most times he is in another room when talking so I can't hear what he is saying. If he says anything where I can hear it is just a few words but I can understand them. I don't know how everyone can handle the effects of AD with humour. To me it isn't humorous and I just want to tell DH to SHUT UP. Lord help me when things get worse!

Thenneck, the full moon thing is real. ask any of the nursing homes around you how the residents go bonkers much more so during the phase. one of the zodiac signs too i think the cancer, the crab one is said to have wild emotions during the fullmoon too..at any rate, there are many of us here assoctiating strange phenomenon during these times. my DH is perfectly ok today on the SAME dose of meds he normally gets for the jerking instances he suffers. during the 2 full moon days i had to double it, and during the LAST full moon as well - i am a believer. divvi

...delves into the bowels ...? I thought that was you, divvi. <grin>

Thenneck, you are TOO funny! But it's true, as divvi has noted, I am definitely NOT one to believe stories of the wonders of folk remedies, nutrient supplements, etc. Very, very, very hard sell. (Guy forwarded Dr Shea's papers on his "treatment" to me ... and lmohr probably doesn't want to hear my opinion of those.)

But the Accera clinical trials are quite convincing -- reasonably large number of participants, properly designed, properly analyzed ... and Axona has been approved by the FDA. And marsh has had Dr Henderson's hypothesis "vetted" by one of his professional contacts, as well. (His 2004 hypothesis paper is quite remarkable.) I think our loved ones will do better when we have access to the real thing (Axona), but coconut oil and/or MCT oil appear to be a reasonable stop-gap measure in the meantime. Pity that the oil is not as effective for APOE4 carriers, but hopefully, Dr Henderson has the key to that issue.

Talking, talking talking. It's really quite fascinating to hear (in very small doses) bec. I hear how his mind is working and not working. Other than absolutely REFUSING to go to the day-care center, he's been cheerful, talkative - he hates for me to babble on (or the women on TV) so when he starts then I start too, which hushes him. Tonight he gave our daughter and me a lengthy disquisition on the death of Nelson at Trafalgar, which he'd read about some years ago.. I think they pickled him in rum or something? I don't know, but I put a video about it at the top of the Netflix queue. But I do think it's the moon!!

You all have me almost talked into the coconut oil, but I'm paranoid about diarrhea and his inability to get to the bathroom in time...
