I think my husband's coming to a halt at shaving. He did let the water overflow the other day and I asked him not to stopper the sink any more (he'd been letting it drain out the overflow valve). He didn't but now he doesn't shave at all. I have no idea how to shave him.
Can anyone recommend an electric shaver - maybe a cordless one?
I got hubby a Remington. Not impressed. He can't use it at all, and I don't do well with it, therefore I am learning to shave him with a blade. Some days are better than others, but now Iam looking for better razors
Well I never thought I would get so good at shaving someone else with a razor blade, but I'm pretty good at it. Although I only shave him twice a week and when my son watched him for a week last year I was thankful to come back to him with a mustache and go-ti(?) less to shave. I gave up on electric shavers also, didn't do as good a job. It all takes practice, practice, practice. So what other choice do we have? Just like everything else we just get in and do it right? Good luck Ladies!
I lucked out on that one. My husband has always used a Norelco electric razor and the last two he bought were cordless. Nowdays, he usually carries it to his recliner or in the car to shave. Doesn't use a mirror anymore, and what difference does it make. He still looks clean shaven. Since ladies electric razor's don't do as good a job as a blade I am assuming the men's don't either but works fine for me. I think he makes circles with it on his beard instead of the way you do a razor.
As many times as I nick myself with a blade I would sure hate to use one on someone else.
Okay, Briegull, I actually have recent experience on this! Lmohr had told me her husband used a Norelco. B. was cutting himself with the razor, lathering up and shaving and then doing it again because he forgot he had done it already.
And it was taking forever--like 20 minutes.
So on Monday, when I was having a Very Bad Day, I took a personal day from work and one of the things I did was to go and buy a cordless razor. I got Norelco-A Closer Shave 7110X. It was about $65.
B. was a little resistant. But I had been talking to him about it for about a month. So he just let me try it on him and it works great. You just kind of press and move it in circles.
He did it himself today and told me that he likes it.
So there's a little success story :) I actually got to work on time this morning! Thank you lmohr and Norelco.
Hooray! Bet it was kind of fun shaving him. My friend shaves her husband every day. She said it's no big deal once she got the hang of it. I've never tried it.
I can't shave Lynn with a regular blade. Well I can, but I wont. I nicked his neck pretty badly and it scared the bajebbers out of me. Never again *eeek
I also use a Norelco, but for the tough spots it just doesn't get, I bought one of those small grooming clippers. It is perfect for his jaw line and neck.
On the other note of this post, I shave my DH with the Gillette Mach3 blades and razor. i have 3 electric ones none work well on his beard. they pull and its worse than anything. i have to say i have it down well now and i can shower/shave him in less than 15min:)x3times a week (or when needed) lots of shaving creme and slightly hot water and it works like a charm. i practiced with him sitting in a chair at first with a towel around him. be sure to hold the face as you shave and slightly pull the skin flat where you are shaving. and usually it works so he wont be moving - i tell you the things we thought we'd never be doing:)))) well , we are. divvi
My husband has used electric shavers for years. When he still had his driver's license, he bought 3 shavers within a short period. Thankfully, one was a cheap $10 one.
Often, he forgets that he has applied pre-shave, so he reapplies it. That gets the shaver gummed up sooner than usual. I disassemble the Norelco shaver heads every few weeks, brush/scrape off the goo, and soak them briefly in alcohol . The instructions say to keep each blade and its foil in their original position when reassembled. I haven't always done that, but it still works.
The blades need to be replaced with new ones every so often, too.
My DH uses a Norelco 3 blade and he loves it but he forgets parts of his face but usually he catches them on the next day when he forgets a different place. Sometimes he only does half his face but in the big picture what does it matter if they miss some hairs or if we miss some. My DH was complaining about sand in his bed at the NH well guess what, he was shaving in bed and opened the top and blew his shaved whiskers into his sheets. Will he remember next time about the shavings probably not.
So we got a Braun "free control" which was about $50.. I couldn't find the model when I went back on Amazon so it may have been a remainder. HE LOVES IT!! As Divvi predicted, he loves the vibration. Carries it around with him. And we forgot to charge it, so this morning I swear he was in mourning until we got it recharged enough to use!
My Dh doesn't shave anymore, altho he tells me he has to shave every day.... it's actually once a week, and I come in to help. I bought a 5 blade fusion razor, and the biggest problem is that it gets clogged between the 5 blades, I keep an old toothbrush handy, and keep cleaning out the blades as we go along. The reason it gets clogged is that this only happens once a week and the beard is pretty long and heavy at that point. I convinced him to grow a mustache, so I don't have to do the upper lip. The worse part for me is doing his neck, but lately, when I shave him, he says it hurts, I don't know how it can hurt, but anyway, I let him start and then I finish.
I have used a Norelco Reflex Plus with three rotary heads for years. I replace the cutter heads every 6 to 12 months. I buy them from the Norelco web site when I need replacements. I'm 72 and I was nicking my face with a regular safety razor, so I switched to the Norelco and no more nicks. I shave dry without any lotions. Sometimes I forget to shave for several days and the Norelco whirrrs through the stubble with no problems. Every month or so, I take the cutter head off and blow it clean with my shop air compressor.
You should be able to shave your husband safely and quickly with a Norelco. Just wipe it back and forth and no more whiskers.
awww briegull. i know the feeling of 'mourning' the loss of buzzers.ha i sent you a note on the other subject aboutt getting now one of the colgate 5dol battery toothbrushes for hubby. my LOVES this too. it super vibrates AND hes brushing more::::))))).-divvi
I have gotten quite good at shaving my husband with a blade. I too thought I would never be able to do it but it isn't that hard once you get the hang of it. I noticed that a couple of you said you husband's had mustache which you thought made shaving easier. My husband has always had a mustache and that is what gives me the problems. It is so full and bushy and that is not the way he wore it but I don't know how to thin it out without shaving it off. Any ideas.
There is a selection of beard/mustache trimmers at Walgreens. They run on AA batteries and have different heads on them. Makes trimming my beard and mustache fairly simple. They do make a buzzing sound. It is important to trim mustache. It really hurts when you take a bite from a sandwich and catch a long mustache hair that gets pulled out.
OK, need help, even tho LOTS has been said on this thread already...My husb hasn't been able to shave for a while now -- previously used "Gillette Foamy Shave Cream for Sensitive Skin" and a regular 3-blade razor...also had a Norelco electric shaver for trimming his mustasche...I have replaced the blades on this elecric shaver, but it still isn't "good enough" to get him shaved appropriately. The "manual method" of shave cream with razor is also not "perfect" because he cannot "flex" his skin & I try "stretching/pulling" it, but it still is hard to do with him resisting and 'ow-ing' me all the time. MEN: Do we need to have some sort of "shave gel or lotion" to use the 'electric' shaver on the cheeks & chin & neck?? What "brand" do y'all recommend most?? Some have mentioned BRAUN on other threads, and I have talked with a friend who's husb had ALS & he also liked the BRAUN best...what makes it the best?? All thoughts/opinions about the gel, cream, razor brands are GREATLY appreciated. And needed asap!! Thank y'all!!
Do you still take him to get his hair cut? If you are going to a traditional barber ask them to get his beard cut so you start out with bare skin. Once that is done whatever advice you get from either the men among us, or the ladies who are shaving their husbands, will work a lot better.
My hubby has started using the salon at our superstore. They will clip his hair nearly bald(they won't shave his head, to his disgust). They will add the shortest attachment and clip his beard as well. He doesn't let them do much with his moustache, because "they don't do it right". He used to have a "handlebar" moustache some of the time and prefers his fairly thick moustache because it disguises his lack of teeth. When he decides it's cold enough, he'll stop having anything cut until next Spring/Summer, when Santa Claus will go back to the salon.
I'm curious about the shave lotion.. he's just been using it dry. And using it and using it and using it! And he has very little beard but I hear the buzz going all day.
I got the Braun because I looked up "best shaver" and it was a best buy recommendation but I'm sorry I don't remember where; I found it at Amazon and got it for under $50, here's the Amazon for it:
Thanks for the input, ladies. Starling, I do still take him for a haircut but it's not a traditional barber like you are speaking of. I have been shaving him with a razor & shave cream, but he's getting more & more sensitive to all 'touch', it seems, so everything seems to be "OUCH" to him...Thanks Briegull for the website -- not sure why you said you had to go through Joan...maybe I missed something in the month I've been away as I'm fairly sure people used to give web addresses all the time. Thanks again all ~ You would think something so "simple" wouldn't be such a tough thing, but it, along with countless other things, is. Hanging in there, but just barely.
My brother in law (RIP) had told me about the Remington PreShave talc stix that you use to 'smooth and soften' the beard for electric razors-it works really well- you can buy thru joans amazon link under search and type in electric preshave talc stick or remington products. its o nly 3.99 i suggest if you use electric razor to use this with it! may be of use to some of you having issues..divvi
Re scissors for mustache trimming. Don't know if they make these for "people" but to trim my pups inside ear hair I bought little scissors in the pet store with rounded tips so there is no chance of accidentally stabbing with the sharp points. They would work well for mustaches, I think. If you can't find them at your pet store try googling.
Here they are, called "ball tipped" scissors.

I got my hubby a Remington. It is easy for me to clean for him since now he shaves when I remind him he needs to. He never cleans them, thinks they don't work when really is just needs cleaning, And it is safer..last time he nicked himself so this works out well.
