Any good suggestions for a mattress pad/cover? Currently I have a waterproof quilted mattress pad/cover under the sheet on DH bed. He is not happy having a plastic under him. Says he hasn't had an accident and that is true except for 3 years ago when he had a temporary med change. I tried to explain to him progression of diseases usually involves accidents occasionally and if we didn't have the plastic cover we would have to throw away the mattress and buy a new one. He said, I would rather do that...I told him a mattress would be $600. So, I thought I would bring it up here since several here are dealing with incontence.(sp)

    Imohr,

Go to the home page of my website - www.thealzheimerspouse.com. Look on the right side, and scroll down to The Alzheimer Store. They have a couple of different mattress covers and pads. Not expensive.

I'v a fairly new matress with a thick pad on top of that. Accidents do happen. I have put the plastic on and then padding, such as large pieces of old blanket, towels, or anything washable and flat, then the sheet. so far nothing has soaked thru to the mattress and nice full pad. I don't mean to tharwt (sp) your business Joan. I've bought thru your store and I do like Amazon.com. Hope this hellps imohr.

Joan - I was going to order from the Alt. store on your site, but your website wasn't listed on the ones to check where I found the item. I thought I would check with you about your getting credit on my order before I ordered. Lois

Check at childrens stores--they make mattress covers that are waterproof but not plastic to cover mattresses that are great. Some of the childrens stores that have bedding have them...

    Imohr,

As far as I know, all you need to do is click on the Alzheimer Store logo on my website. Order whatever you want, and it is credited to my account. I will check with my contact person about my website not being listed. Thanks for telling me.

With Amazon, if you order through the links I provide, it is credited to me - my code is embedded in the link address (complicated technical stuff - I can't believe I actually learned all of it.)

Imohr, I have had good results with the CVS Pharmacy underpad that is 30x36 inches. My wife lays in the same spot all night. The underpad is between her and the sheet. The Depends catch most of her incontinence at night and the underpad usually gets the rest. I replace the underpad each morning when I get her up for breakfast.

C is that under-pad disposable or washable?

I'm also thinking about getting a waterproof bad under the regular mattress cover in the next few months. My husband has had no incontinence problems at all, so I've got time to figure this out. What I think I want is something that won't make noise. If he doesn't know it is there, he won't complain.

Starling, they are disposable. See "super absorbent underpads" on the CVS website or
    http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=455072&productId=455072&navAction=jump&navCount=3

They are two layers: water proof on the bottom layer and absorbent on the top layer. Hospitals use them.

It takes all three to do the job right: waterproof pad under mattress cover, Depends on person and underpad between person and sheet.

    C, thanks for the information.

OK, what is the best waterproof pad to buy? What type? And if anyone has a really good source I'd like it.

At this point my husband isn't incontinent, but he does sweat up the bed almost on a daily basis. Badly enough that it needs to be aired for several hours. So it is time for the pad. What should I buy and how many should I buy?

If your husband is offended that you think he might wet the bed, try telling him it's to protect the mattress from spills (we would drink our morning coffee in bed) or pet accidents. It worked with my husband. I also put a thin quilt between the sheet and the waterproof mattress cover, which cut down considerably on the plastic feel and noise.

Joan --Did you find out if you are getting credit on the Altz. supplies? beenthere - DH doesn't have any liquids or pets in his bed. Now me, that's a different story. I sleep in my own room and take a bag of popcorn and glass of ice water to bed every night along with a book, magazine or crossword puzzle. I have my own private party.

I bought a totally leak proof ( so it says) pad on the internet..am having a hard time finding the source again, but could if anyone was interested. It is GREAT! Doesn't feel like the proverbial one...put it under the normal mattress pad. It was around $100.00 for a king sized bed. What I really loved about it is that it fits..no excess bedding stuff hanging down. Doesn't feel like a plastic backed cover. I will chase the source down if anyone wants to know about it.

The pad I got is from www.northshorecaresupply.com, and I was wrong about the price..$69.95 + s&h. Great price for this quality. It is called Protect a bed mattress pad. Their phone is 800-563-0161.
    Hope this helps you.

Kathi, thanks for taking the time to look up the info for us!

Thanks Kathi. Looks like that is an all over one with more coverage than the Altz. site has. Looks like if we order ANYTHING from
Amazon Joan would get something from it if her site is tagged somehow. I don't know why they don't have her website listed.

Anyway, if we are looking for DVD's, pots and pans, or whatever maybe she would get a commission on the Amazon site.???? I that is so and we are ordering from Amazon we should access their site from this website and let her have a commission.
