JOAN’S BLOG – TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2008 – CRUISING

As you know, July was the month that almost did me in completely. (See July Blogs in Previous Blog section) It is a testament to the wonderful help of my social workers, support group friends, and all of YOU, that I pulled through. I am somewhat battered and bruised emotionally, but still standing. Sid is currently calm. The Alzheimer Devil has receded. For now.

July’s stress and emotional trauma made me realize just how much I am looking forward to the Caregiver Cruises.

Everyone has their own opinion about types of vacations they like best, but I am tired. Very tired.  As my blogs tell the story – caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s Disease is mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausting. A cruise will give me the opportunity to relax, rest, and do nothing but read a book if that is what I choose. On the other hand, if I feel up to it, I can take a shore excursion and sight see, snorkel, lie on a beach, or shop. On the January Caregiver Cruise, I wanted to sight see in Key West, but was worn out and didn’t feel like walking, so a group of us took a trolley tour.

I am very excited about the February Caregiver Stress Management cruise. I’m up for snorkeling in Grand Cayman and watching the world famous Key West sunset. I do hope many of you will be joining me. Since I live in Florida, the weather is not an issue for me – February is beautiful here – usually in the middle 70’s. But for those of you in the snow belt – what a treat to bask in warm sunshine in the middle of the winter.

Although optional, I would encourage everyone to attend the on board support group meetings. Those of us who did, gained knowledge and comfort from sharing our stories.

For those of you considering joining us, we will be sailing on the Celebrity CenturyCelebrity Century, leaving the Port of Miami on February 9, 2009, for 5 nights, with stops in Key West and Grand Cayman. In September 09, we will be sailing for 7 nights to Alaska on Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas, leaving the Port of Seattle on September 4, 2009, with stops in Juneau, Skagway, Tracy Arm Fjord, and Victoria. For more information on what to expect on a Caregiver Cruise, prices, and deposit dates, click this link.

It has not been decided yet if I will be doing any formal speaking or workshops on the cruises, but I certainly will be looking forward to meeting and talking with those of you who are able to take one or both of the trips with us. What fun it will be to RELAX together. We all could use a break from the drama and trauma of Alzheimer's Disease.
