JOAN’S BLOG – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2009 – A SPECIAL ALZHEIMER’S DOCUMENTARY FOR WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY (SEPT. 21)

For those of you who are not yet aware, September 21, 2009 is World Alzheimer’s Day, a day when Alzheimer’s Associations AROUND THE WORLD unite to raise awareness of the disease. The theme for this year’s World Alzheimer’s Day is “Diagnosing Dementia: See it Sooner”. The focus of this theme will be on the importance of getting a diagnosis and encouraging medical professionals to recognize the signs of the disease in order for people to receive the treatment they need.” ( from “World Alzheimer’s Day”.) This is something I emphasize repeatedly when new members join this site. Many are confused about the symptoms, the conflicting diagnoses by doctors not specializing in memory disorders, and frantic to find answers and solutions. Although Alzheimer’s Disease is progressive and incurable, getting the proper diagnosis as soon as possible will allow for stabilizing treatments and a better quality of life. My own Alzheimer’s chapter won a $1.5 million grant from American Express for our project “Early Detection Matters.” Our member, Betty Weiss, has written a column about early detection, and I have written two blogs Wed. May 28, 2008 and Wed. Aug. 27, 2008, about its importance.

The Alzheimer Spouse website is planning a series of blogs and links to informative articles relating to World Alzheimer’s Day, but today, I would like to share with you the news of a Retirement Living TV (RLTV) documentary called “Not Fade Away”. Although it will air on September 21, 2009 at 8 PM, you can watch preview clips of it now at www.rl.tv . Also, please CLICK HERE for an educational article and a series of links to what is planned for World Alzheimer’s Day.

I am doing the best I can to get back to normal website operations, but our move has worn me to a frazzle. Sid is functioning on slow, slower, slowest, and sleep, while I am trying to unpack, organize, and set up. The decorating can wait, but the office set-up cannot. I cannot find my bills, among other important papers, so I am determined to get the office boxes unpacked and put away as soon as possible. Once I am organized enough to know where everything is, I will have more information for you on the Book Project, World Alzheimer’s Day, the planned “expert resource section”, Caregiver Cruises, and a host of other interesting projects.
