JOAN’S WEEKEND BLOG – JUNE 4-6, 2011 – MY SURGERY

When I was originally scheduled for shoulder surgery http://hale.nrsd.net/images/girl_arm-in_sling.jpgin March, I wrote a series of blogs related to the differences between surgery now, with my husband sinking into the depths of Alzheimer quicksand, and surgery of years past when he was by my side, physically and emotionally. I am stressed, weary, and in a lot of pain from my shoulder to my hand, so I do not have the emotional fortitude or physical ability (typing and using the mouse cause great pain to my shoulder) to write more about it. What I wrote then stands now. My feelings have not changed. Click these links for those blogs:

Blindsided Again

What I can say today is that I feel very lonely facing surgery without “my Sid” by my side. My sister will bring him to the hospital, but it won’t be the same as when he was himself. I know he is worried about me, as he asks every day when Arlene is coming, when I am going into the hospital, what he will be doing, when can he see me, and when will I be coming home. We are trying to keep the schedule as easy as possible for him. Then my father asks the same questions. withoutbroadband-small After tomorrow, my sister will be dealing with both of them.

Surgery is scheduled for Monday morning, and I am supposed to be coming home on Tuesday to Drill Sergeant Arlenewoman%20mad%20digi_gif, who will yell at me if I try to do anything.

It was not planned this way, but the changes to the website are occurring at the same time as my surgery, which means I will not be able to answer your questions for about a week. I will be putting up on the home page, the message boards, as well as via e-mails and Facebook, the new RSS feed link. It will allow you to subscribe to my blogs. The tutorial I promised those who are not familiar with RSS feeds will not be ready for at least a week, but I will give basic instructions with the link.

As soon as I clear it with Dr. Josh, I will put up a Q & A “sticky” thread on the message boards – “Ask the Geriatrician”.  Our member, Marsh, is also a doctor AND a spousal caregiver, and has been very generous in sharing his knowledge with us. I know he will continue to contribute, but I do not want to burden him with having the job of being a “regular”, and having to check the message boards for questions every day. He has enough to do caring for his wife.

The next blog you read will probably be written by my sister. I will be on the Message Boards until Sunday night.
