JOAN’S BLOG – MONDAY, JULY 26, 2010 – THE ALZHEIMER SPOUSE BIRTHDAY CARD

My attempt at keeping my birthday a secret has failed miserably, due to the power of the Internet and my own forgetfulness at having posted the darn date on my Facebook profile. My thanks to all who have sent good wishes.  I do intend to make a spa appointment for sometime this week and get myself pampered to the hilt.

We talk often of how much comprehension our spouses have lost, and how unaware they seem of the love they had for us before Alzheimer’s Disease. My own husband is not as far along as many of you who write on the message boards, but his short term memory is nil; comprehension is limited to the concrete; and he is basically unaware of the rest of his deficits. However, since the rages and verbal abuse have calmed, of which he has no memory, by the way, he has shown nothing but love and concern for me. He asked me to drive him to the store so he could pick out a birthday card for me. I would like to share it with you, as it meant the world to me to know that although we are not the team we once were, love does run deep. He picked it out all by himself:

“I Love the Story of Us”

Once upon a time,
you reached out your hand to me,
and we began this journey….
Along the way, I’ve discovered
that being with you
grows sweeter and sweeter every day.
Whatever life takes us,
the shelter of your embrace
will always be my home-
the light of your loving smile
my warmth and comfort.

You are my storybook love,
the woman of my dreams.
And our life together
is my happily ever after.

Happy Birthday

That is better than a spa appointment any day.
