JOAN’S BLOG – TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2011 – MISSING THE EXCITEMENT

I am sad today. This is the first time in 3 years that I have not attended the Alzheimer’s Advocacy Forum in Washington, DC., which is this week – May 15-17. As an Alzheimer Advocate and Florida delegate, I felt that my presence at the Forum really made a difference. It allowed me to do something proactively in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.

Due to my husband’s declining condition, particularly his physical disabilities, it was impossible for me to attend this year. For those of you who have been with me since the inception of this website in 2007, you will recall our member, Tony Pesare, whose wife Tracey, died from EOAD at the age of 43. Tony and I “met” on the website, and in person at the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Forum. He is attending again this year, and has promised me a detailed account of the activities.

I urge you to follow the information and activities at the Forum on the Alzheimer’s website – http://www.alz.org/forum/overview.asp
Find out what the delegates from your State are doing, to whom they are speaking, to whom they are listening, and for which bills they are advocating.

You may not think this is of any relevance to you, but you may find that your “armchair” participation can be exciting and interesting. It will give you the opportunity to read and learn about interesting people from every part of the country - both caregivers and those with AD. Reading what the speakers – celebrities, politicians, and advocates like you and me, are saying is an excellent way to be exposed to new ideas and information.

The first year I went to the Forum, I knew the time would come when Sid’s condition would deteriorate to the point that I would be unable to attend. I did not expect it to be so soon, but I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve three years in a row. I did not realize how much I would miss it.

As I am writing this, I am realizing that some of the things I am desperately missing from the Forum are intellectual stimulation, thought provoking conversation, meeting new people, discussing and exchanging ideas and information. That gives me the subject for my next blog. Tune in tomorrow.
