JOAN’S BLOG – WED/THUR, APRIL 8/9, 2009 – HELP FOR OUR BRAVE MALE CAREGIVERS

A year ago,, I wrote a blog saluting our male caregivers, but it occurred to me recently, because of some of the message board questions from these harried guys, that they need more than a salute and a pat on the back. They need solutions. Research tells us that men are solution oriented.

We know that these brave, compassionate, work force competent male spouses have tackled the laundry, cooking, and cleaning, as tasks to be learned and mastered. And they are rightly proud of themselves for their accomplishments. But honestly, what guy ever expected to have to figure out how to put pantyhose on his wife (We set Marsh straight on that one, didn’t we ladies? Knee highs, anyone?); put makeup on her face; style her hair; deal with facial hair he never knew she had (because we are so good at hiding it from them)? These are just some of the questions we have received from our male caregivers.

There is a section on the left side of this website for a large variety of resources. One is for general caregiving tips. I am going to make a section just for our male caregivers – SOLUTIONS to Caregiving tips you always wanted to know, but were afraid (or maybe not) to ask.

Many of these questions and answers are scattered throughout the message boards. Gentlemen – I need your help. I am going to start a message board topic specifically for a list of topics you would like answered. Ask your questions. Ladies(and gentlemen who know the answers) – answer the questions. When we have enough, I will have it organized and put into a special side topic on the home page just for the guys. My present to you brave male soldiers in the Alzheimer War.
