JOAN’S BLOG – FRIDAY, April 11, 2008 – WASHINGTON,DC -  HERE WE COME!

Although I did not choose it, and have been fighting it all the way, Alzheimer’s Disease has certainly led me down roads I never would have imagined taking. One of them leads straight to Washington, DC.

In February, spurred on by our reader Tony’s new found activism, I wrote a Blog about getting involved in raising awareness for desperately needed Alzheimer funding. I wrote a letter to my State Senator, Bill Nelson, and my representative, Tim Mahoney. I posted Senator Nelson’s automated response on the message boards.  I also helped host a fundraiser in front of our local Publix Supermarket, and I completed the Memory Walk. I figured that was it for me for the year. That was triple what I usually do in the “activism” field.

But now I have been given a unique opportunity to go straight to the source with my story, this website, and your stories, to meet and mingle with activists and advocates from all over the country, and together, present our cause to the politicians who hold the purse strings.

The Alzheimer’s Association 20th Annual Public Policy Forum will be held in Washington, DC from May 12-14.  It is three days of receptions, speeches, information, workshops, and our chance to make a difference. Click here for the link to conference information and registration if you are interested in attending.

For those of you who cannot attend, but would like to tell your stories, please e-mail them to me, and I will bring them with me to the conference. Besides the obvious plea for research dollars, my focus will also be to bring awareness to spousal issues. Tony will be speaking for EOAD.

I am very excited about this opportunity to represent all of us. If you have any ideas or suggestions for either Tony or me that you would like us to address at the Forum,  please post them under existing Message Board Topic: Alzheimer Public Policy Forum.
